Let’s face it – the average millennial today has a fairly busy life. Of course, what keeps a millennial busy can vary – for some, it could be something productive, while for others, let’s just say their “passion” takes up most of their time.

The point is that we millennials are a busy lot, occupied with our own things to do. That leaves us with very little time for trivialities such as cooking. Plus, why bother cooking when your food problems can be sorted with a simple app.

Yup. We have apps for that now. Don’t get confused. These aren’t apps that actually cook food for you. We’re talking about food delivery apps. The market is flooded with them these days and some standout, while others barely make it.

Like most western countries, even Singapore has jumped on to the food delivery app bandwagon and one of the most popular food delivery apps here is “Deliveroo”. It currently ranks at “42” in SimilarWeb’s list of “Most Popular Apps in Singapore”.

Mind you, this is a list of all popular apps in the country. So, 42 isn’t a bad place to be.

Deliveroo hails from the UK and was founded by Greg Orlowski and Will Shu. Thanks to some major series C funding, the app has made it into over 808 countries, including Singapore.

The app focuses on food delivery services for restaurants that don’t offer a delivery service of their own. So, if you have a favorite restaurant that won’t deliver, Deliveroo will take care of it.

The Experience

To begin with, the app has a fairly easy to use interface. You look for nearby restaurants and once you tap on the chosen one, you gain access to the respective menu. All you need to do now is browse and pick the dishes you like.

The chosen dishes get added to “My Basket”, where you can verify if the right ones made it. You also get shown the total price of your order. After that, you simply checkout and have your order submitted. You’ll get an immediate notification about the submission.

You can even track the progress of your delivery using the map feature.

As for the delivery itself, it depends on factors such as location and order size. But, it would be safe to assume that most of them don’t take over an hour.

Verdict

On the whole, Deliveroo is a fairly good delivery app. One key advantage is that you get to choose from a wide range of restaurants. Adding to that is the fact that these are restaurants that don’t normally offer delivery services. So, you’ve got the luxury of accessing something that would have been inaccessible before.

The process for setting up your profile isn’t too hard and the delivery changes aren’t exorbitant either. Deliveroo charges a flat rate, so, it doesn’t matter where you’re ordering from or what you’re ordering.

They have a live chat support that actually responds.

Finally, the delivery ETA is usually accurate and you’ll have the order delivered right to your doorstep.

But, there are areas that can be improved. For instance, tipping is done before the order. So, you can’t make changes even if you are left feeling unsatisfied with the service.

Then, there is the issue of establishments not being rated, which means you either have to order from familiar joints or take a risk. In some cases, the menus aren’t organized well either, which can cause you to make mistakes.

Lastly, the search function could do with a few improvements.

But, on the whole, it’s a app that should meet most of your expectations.
